Test Taking Tips

1. What is the question asking?
2. Write down everything you know about the question
3. Write True/False/? next to each answer
4.Which answer answers the question?

Iron Chef Labs

Team 1: Strawberries

Would one conventional or organic strawberry dissolve faster or more than the other in a beaker of 24g of amylase?

Had a hard time making conclusions because they had many error in experimentation
The difference between organic and conventional

Strawberries decomposed the most in pectin. Not a huge difference between organic and conventional.

Team 2: Strawberries

If a lab technician swabs a organic and a conventional strawberry and transfers it into an agar plate and later an incubator then the organic strawberries’ agar plate will grow more botrytis cinerea than the agar plate with the swab from the conventional strawberry because the organic strawberries are not allowed to use pesticides to prevent mold.

Swabbed 4 organic and 4 conventional strawberries and compared mold growth quantity and speed.

Team 1: Sugar

If bacteria is exposed to 3 different types of sugars; light fructose corn syrup, cane sugar, and honey on 15 individual petri dishes for a period of 1 week, then the bacteria with the light fructose corn syrup will grow a substantial amount of bacteria compared to the plates with the cane sugar and the honey because the light fructose corn syrup is full of the added chemicals from the production of corn and when the unhealthy sugars are added to the corn syrup, it will cause a greater reaction because it stimulated the bacteria.

How 3 sugars affect bacterial growth by linking it to human health
Sugar with the least amount of bacteria also would have the least effect on human health?

1. Took swab off phone to collect bacteria
2. Transfered into agar plate and added 3 different types of sugar

Cane sugar: 41%
Honey: 54%
Low fructose colony: 34%
No sugar added: 24%

Sugar provides bacteria with the ability to grow. Low fructose is most processed and grew the least. Honey is least processed but grew the most bacteria.

Team 2: Sugar

Purpose: Will it effect the human body?

Team 1: Corn

What is BPA?
chemical found inside plastic containers

If a plastic water bottle is melted down and BPA is collected and placed on kernels of corn, then the corn kernel that received this BPA will experience more cellular damage in comparison to unaffected corn because BPA is a toxic chemical and will kill aspects of the cell.

no clear conclusions, except that BPA is bad for you

Team 2: Corn

If 50g of frozen, canned, and a conventional ear of corn are stored within an incubator at 33° C, then the conventional ear of corn will generate the most bacteria within 6 observational days because no methods have been applied to prevent the growth of bacteria and promote the preservation of the corn.
Frozen Corn killed the most bacteria. Conventional corn travels around and carries a lot of bacteria. If you have a poor immune system canned corn is the best option.

Team 1: Drinks

If human teeth are placed in a cup of coca cola, green juice, water, coffee and lemon juice (3 for each beverage) for 14 days, then the tooth that was in the cup of coca cola will have the largest increase in weight because the coca cola contains the most corn syrup, which can cause a lot of plaque and buildup on teeth if not brushed frequently.

If a person drinks 20 ml of the Bolthouse green smoothie, then they will have more natural bacterial growth in their mouth compared the same person when they drink 20 ml of the Coca Cola because the soda has artificial sugars and the Bolthouse drink contains natural sugar.

Coca-cola: Black by the end of the experiment:
Coffee: some buildup and staining
Green juice: no buildup. only a little stain bc of green color
Listerine: some buildup and really dark blue

Companies have traded trans fat for added sugars. How do these sugar affect our teeth and overall health? Causes cavities

Team 2: Drinks

If yeast is given different liquids with varying amounts of natural and artificial sugars in bottles with balloons on top, then the bottle with the most natural sugar will inflate the balloon the most because the yeast will thrive with the natural sugars causing the yeast to release more carbon dioxide.
